Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction

**1. Visual Inspection and Connector Integrity Check:** Begin by visually inspecting the output speed sensor (OSS) and its wiring harness. Locate the OSS, typically found on the transmission tailshaft or output housing. Look for any signs of physical damage to the sensor itself, such as cracks or impact marks. Pay close attention to the electrical connector: check for corrosion, bent pins, loose connections, or frayed/chafed wiring leading to and from the sensor. Disconnect the connector, inspect the terminals for green or white corrosion, and ensure they are clean and make good contact. Repair or clean any damaged or corroded components found.

**2. Scan Tool Live Data Analysis:** Connect an advanced OBD2 scan tool capable of displaying live data. Access the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) data stream and monitor the 'Output Speed Sensor' (OSS) reading. With the drive wheels safely off the ground (if applicable for testing in 'drive') or by driving the vehicle at a steady speed, observe the OSS signal. It should show a consistent, smooth increase in speed as the vehicle accelerates and decrease as it decelerates. Compare this reading to the 'Vehicle Speed Sensor' (VSS) and 'Input Speed Sensor' (ISS) if available. Erratic readings, a constant zero reading when the vehicle is moving, or readings that do not correlate with actual vehicle speed indicate a sensor or circuit issue.

**3. Electrical Circuit Testing (Voltage, Ground, Signal):** With the ignition on and the sensor connected (back-probing) or disconnected (for resistance/continuity), use a digital multimeter (DMM) to test the OSS circuit. First, check for proper reference voltage (typically 5V or 12V, consult vehicle-specific wiring diagrams) at the sensor connector. Next, verify a good ground connection. Finally, test the signal wire. For a Hall-effect sensor, you might see a square wave signal with an oscilloscope, or a fluctuating voltage with a DMM as the wheel is spun. For an inductive sensor, you'd look for an AC voltage signal that increases with speed. A lack of voltage, ground, or an incorrect signal output points to a problem with the sensor itself or the wiring leading to the PCM/TCM. Check for continuity of the signal wire from the sensor connector all the way to the PCM/TCM connector to rule out open circuits, and check for shorts to ground or power.

**4. Resistance Check of the Output Speed Sensor:** If the sensor is an inductive type (two-wire sensor), disconnect the sensor and measure its internal resistance across its terminals using a DMM. Compare this reading to the manufacturer's specifications (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand ohms). An open circuit (infinite resistance) or a short circuit (very low resistance, near zero) indicates an internal failure of the sensor. For Hall-effect sensors (typically three-wire), a resistance check is not usually applicable for diagnosing internal failure; focus on voltage, ground, and signal output.
