Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Low Input

Step 1: Conduct a thorough visual inspection of the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, its electrical connector, and the wiring harness leading to it. Look for any signs of physical damage, such as frayed or exposed wires, corrosion on the connector terminals, loose connections, or evidence of rodent damage. Ensure the sensor is securely seated in its housing and that there are no coolant leaks around its base, which could affect its electrical integrity. Check the coolant level; while not a direct cause of P0117, low coolant can lead to erratic temperature readings.

Step 2: With the ignition key in the 'ON' position (KOEO) and the engine off, disconnect the ECT sensor connector. Using a digital multimeter, measure the voltage between the signal wire terminal (typically 5V reference) and the ground wire terminal within the harness connector. You should observe approximately 5 volts on the reference wire and continuity to chassis ground on the ground wire. If the 5V reference is missing or significantly low, or if the ground is poor, trace the wiring back to the PCM for opens or shorts. If these are correct, reconnect the sensor and back-probe the signal wire. With a cold engine, the voltage should be relatively high (e.g., 3-4V). If the voltage is consistently very low (e.g., <0.5V) even when cold, it indicates a short to ground in the sensor or the signal wire.

Step 3: Disconnect the ECT sensor and measure its internal resistance using a multimeter set to ohms. Compare this reading to a temperature-resistance chart specific to your vehicle's ECT sensor (found in service manuals). At ambient temperature (e.g., 70°F/21°C), the sensor should exhibit a resistance typically in the range of 2,000 to 4,000 ohms. A significantly lower resistance reading (e.g., under 100 ohms) at ambient temperature strongly suggests an internal short within the sensor, causing the 'low input' (high temperature) signal to the PCM. You can also carefully warm the sensor (e.g., with a heat gun or by placing it in hot water) and observe if the resistance smoothly decreases as temperature rises. Erratic readings or a complete lack of change indicate a faulty sensor.

Step 4: If the sensor tests good, the issue likely lies within the wiring harness. Disconnect both the ECT sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Using a multimeter, check for continuity between the ECT signal wire terminal at the PCM connector and chassis ground. There should be no continuity; if there is, the signal wire is shorted to ground somewhere between the sensor and the PCM. Also, check for continuity between the signal wire and other wires in the harness (e.g., 5V reference, ground wire) to rule out internal shorts within the harness. Repair any identified shorts or open circuits.
